Beyond the Labels
A delicious trio of dark and plush Australian bestsellers, plus Gold medal winners from Portugal, Argentina and Italy. From Malbec to Merlot, Durif to Nero d'Avola, there's so much to explore.
Wine Spectator calls Portugal “the most exciting wine place on the planet”, with its terrific range of native grape varieties and wines that always offer standout value. The rich, mouthfilling Lobo e Falcão fits firmly in that category. It’s made at a 17th century estate owned by the Lobo de Vasconcelos family, once the location of the king’s falconry. Special barrels of wine were kept for the king when he visited. Today, talented winemaker Joana Lopes makes this red specially for us, blending Syrah with Portugal’s exciting native grapes. Previously awarded a Wine Enthusiast Best Buy Award, the 2021 has lovely intensity of flavour due to another dry year. Generous wild berry fruit and spice with a velvet texture – a very moreish red.
As one of the most exciting talents in Argentina, Rodolfo Sadler (aka Opi) is the magician behind this bestselling hero red. He’s a gentle, affable man, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, yet modest to a fault. When asked to tell us his secret to making such great wines (he has two permanently in our Top 20!), he simply shrugged and said, "this is how my family has always made wine." Typical Opi, the humble, crafty magician. And why Opi? The nickname came from his childhood when his little sister would follow him round the family vineyards calling ‘Opi, Opi’ as she couldn’t pronounce his name. Now 40 years on and an internationally renowned winemaker, the name's stuck! We recommend this with a juicy grilled steak or a hearty casserole.
Spring Hill is a terrific introduction to the magic of an Irvine Merlot. Made with premium fruit from prime vineyards in South Australia's elevated rocky Eden Valley sub-region. It shows a richness, vibrancy and velvety plushness that shows you're most definitely in the hands of a master. Indeed, Irvine won 'Barossa Merlot Winery of the Year' at the prestigious New York International Wine Competition 2020. The nose is lifted and fresh with delicious summer berry characters and elegant spice. The medium-bodied to full-bodied palate has red and black plums earth spice and black olives. Soft and juicy the mouthwatering brightness and long smooth finish will have you reaching for another glass. Enjoy!
According to winemaker Alan Kennett (and thousands of Black Stump customers), when you combine Durif and Shiraz “magical things happen”. Perhaps that explains Black Stump’s splendid two decades of popularity. The wine owes its name to a mythical outback marker of the boundary between the known world and the unknown. Describe anything as the best “this side of the black stump” and you mean it’s reckoned to be unbeatable. How appropriate for an affordable Aussie red of peerless intensity and popularity. Dark Durif, “the grape that takes no prisoners” (The Observer), and impressively juicy Shiraz make a perfect marriage, creating a velvety, voluptuous, and irresistible style. Serve in large glasses with steak and kidney pie or a Sunday roast.
In 1968 western Sicily was rocked by an earthquake. Such was the devastation, residents of Poggioreale had no choice but to abandon their properties and rebuild further down the hill. Whole settlements became ghost towns overnight. This included Dino’s grandfather’s Nero d’Avola vineyards. 50 years on, Dino set out to recover his grandfather’s lost plot of land. He found it wild and uncultivated, yet producing jewel-like grapes with amazing flavour. In 2017 he made his first ‘revived’ vintage which proved a sensation with customers. It's pure Nero d’Avola, a Sicilian grape, fast becoming a fashionable pick in smart restaurants across the world. Dino’s creation is packed with rich black fruits, vibrant cherry and spice. A top choice with sausage casserole.
The famous Black Pig range was named after Tanuki, a character-filled winery pig owned by a talented McLaren Vale winemaker. We don’t often reserve cases for our museum program, but when our wine team tasted the 2016, they were in awe. It was fantastic vintage, with all the hallmarks of a wine which would get better with age, and they sure were right! The dark chocolate and mint notes, so prominent on initial release, have relaxed, as have the tannins – giving it a mouth-filling softness and enhancing the wine’s richness. Still retains a lovely fruit edge.
