Beyond the Labels
Looking for a little European flair? We simply adore Spain for its passionate winemakers, excellent tapas and smooth, elegant reds. Set your nightlife alight with a selection of tantalising Spanish reds from Rioja, Jumilla, Cariñena, and more.
This is an intensely flavoured, weighty red, similar in style to the rich, powerful and highly sought after reds of Priorat. The big difference, however, is the price – a fraction of that asked for Priorat wines. It was made at the Padró family cellar, founded in 1898, which draws on the expertise of winemaker Mario García. He has had experience throughout Spain (including Priorat, Montsant and Penedès), and has achieved many 5-Star ratings from top wine guide Guía Peñín. Combining concentrated, old bush vine (up to 70 years old) Monastrell (known to us as Mourvèdre or Mataro) plus a portion of strawberry-scented Tempranillo, it’s a lavish and layered wine that’s really hard to resist. It's a brilliant partner to grilled meats, or pair it with your next tapas feast. Delicious!
This is a BIG fruity red that customers adore. It hails from a little-known region of Spain. Cast down its eastern coast and you’ll stumble across the desert-like landscape of Jumilla. It’s where Spaghetti Westerns used to be filmed and is home to some of the oldest and most concentrated Syrah and Monastrell vines in Spain. Camino de Seda, meaning ‘Silk Road’, comes from a winery just off this historic route that brought wealth and splendour to the region over 500 years ago. It’s crafted by Scottish-born winemaker Pamela Geddes. Her passion for wine took her to Australia where she learnt how to capture freshness and fruitiness in the hottest of climates, so she's right at home in Jumilla. Sweet mocha, blackberry and vanilla aromas, followed by super-concentrated black fruit flavours with an edge of spice. A warming red to enjoy with hearty dishes.
Big Red El Bombero has been a top choice with customers for over 20 years. And in special vintages, winemaker Javier Domeque crafts a sophisticated Gran Reserva version using the pick of the crop from his oldest vines. To qualify for Gran Reserva status, the wine is aged in oak for three years with further time in bottle prior to release. It’s made mostly from Garnacha, an important component of many full-bodied Spanish reds (and also of Châteauneuf-du-Pape), with a generous portion of juicy Tempranillo for added flavour. It's a touch more refined than El Bombero itself, but still full of rich berry flavour and with delicious spicy complexity from American oak. Drinking perfectly right now with roast lamb, game or a selection of tapas.
In Spain’s sun-baked La Mancha, the same families have tended small plots of old bush vines for centuries. Usually no more than a few widely spaced rows, handed down from one generation to the next. But with locals swapping country life for the city, these vines are in danger of being abandoned. Bodegas Fontana recognises the quality in the traditional bush vines and, as encouragement, the winemaker Tómas Buendía takes care to pay growers in the region a little more for their grapes. This way they carry on nurturing the precious organic vineyards and keep the ancient wine culture alive. Full of rich cherry, plum and blueberry with the spiced bramble character of the Syrah, this great value red is perfect for roast lamb or a summer barbecue.
It’s back, and better than ever! We’ve been holding onto the sweet memory of this juicy, dark Spanish Garnacha for years. Back in the 1990s it was one of Tony Laithwaite’s favourite wines, and our customers loved it too. Today it’s made by Bodegas Raíces Ibérica, which was set up by Mark Schiettekat in 2020. Starting up as a local wine merchant (from his garage) in Aragón in the 1990s, Mark has come a long way and has been impressing the critics as he goes. Master of Wine Jancis Robinson listed the bodega as one of Spain’s “exciting newcomers”. Winemaker Rubén Magallanes, a Garnacha fanatic, uses high-altitude, old-vine fruit, to ensure a freshness to the flavour-filled, sweetly spiced red. Juicy red fruits, notes of cocoa powder, spices and balsamic. It's a warming glass solo or with hearty dishes.
For any lover of red wine, you can’t go wrong with Rioja. In all its Tempranillo glory, it’s pleasingly juicy with a wonderful smoky base. Any Rioja is a treat, but if we’re getting picky, wines from the superior Rioja Alta are the crown jewels. And Bodegas Patrocinio are ideally placed in the beating heart of this sought-after sub-region. Surrounded by mountains, and bordered by three rivers, their vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate. Abundant sunshine, proximity to water and high altitude allow the Tempranillo grapes to ripen to perfection whilst retaining an appealing freshness. Harvested from old vines, the fruit is concentrated. Ripples of ripe red cherry, pepped with spicy liquorice. Partner with grilled meats or tasty tapas!
