Beyond the Labels
This dazzling dozen features recently rated wines by top critic David Walker Bell. He’s impressed – you will be too! Delight in a creamy 92pt Southern French Chardonnay and the fruity aromas of 91pt Aquarius Rosé from Victoria's McPherson Wines. Reds include a lavish 92pt McLaren Vale GSM from the exceptional Richard Hamilton estate, and you’ve a rich 93pt Barossa Cabernet from Peter Lehmann. Plus a special price for UNLIMITED members.
A deliciously smooth and silky GSM from the great Richard Hamilton estate. Fruit comes from the Hamilton family’s Farm Block, while the individual varieties, Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre were fermented separately and aged in seasoned oak to retain fruit dominance. Full red with youthful crimson hues. Subtle use of oak allows the fruit to shine through to reveal attractive hints of boiled fruit cake with cinnamon and cloves this wine will accompany the best pasta, paella, or rich gamey meals – or just enjoy it on its own.
Peter Lehmann was known as the ‘Baron of the Barossa’, was a member of the Order of Australia, was called "a legend in his own lifetime” (Halliday) and “the most famous man in the Australian wine business” (Matthew Jukes). Barossa Cabernet is lavishly dark and mouthfilling ... as you’ll see when you taste this lavish example. Classic, inky black colour with generous lashings of rich dark blackcurrant, forest fruits, chocolate with eucalypt mint and spice undertones.
The McPherson family's new Aquarius range is made for enjoying right here, right now. Fresh, vibrant and filled to the brim with flavour, they’re wines to share with fun folk in the mood for good times. Their Rosé is certainly that and more. Lovely strawberry and cream notes with a little zip too!
A rich, top class Chardonnay from Le Chai au Quai, without a lofty appellation or price tag, but with Gold medal heritage! How do the winemakers at our grand 19th century cellar in Castillon manage that? They search every remote corner of France for fruit with superb ripeness and intensity, and aren’t bothered by the appellation on the label. So their top Chardonnay is unlikely to come from Burgundy. In fact this luscious white uses grapes gathered from the hills close to Carcassonne in the Languedoc. It’s an ultra rich style, the wine fermented and aged in barrel. And, just like all the finest Burgundies, it went through a malolactic fermentation, which makes the wine even creamier. Gently chilled, it’s superb with white meats or salmon.
