Wine Summary
Spain’s wines have never been better value, and little known regions like Yecla are especially worth exploring. This characterful red is from Bodegas Castaño, listed in Oz Clarke’s Grapes and Wines as one of Spain’s best producers of Monastrell. Their arid vineyards produce tiny yields of around 25 hectolitres per hectare (even Cru Classé Bordeaux vineyards produce around 45), which are key to the superb concentration in this wine. Grapes for Gran Calero were selected from 30 year old vines that dig deep into the stony soil, picking up subtle minerally complexity in their search for moisture. Gentle oak ageing and a splash of rare Petit Verdot have added spicy richness to this red. A great match for lamb dishes or a vegetarian casserole.
