Find top quality Gran Reserva Rioja, Double Gold winning McLaren Vale Grenache, silky and spicy Patagonian Malbec, incredibly intense 90pt Puglian Susumaniello, concentrated 92pt Clare Valley Shiraz, and more.
This luxurious, barrel-aged beauty comes from the Freitas family, whose 210-hectare estate near Lisbon is dedicated to producing some of Portugal’s finest wines. In 2008 they won ‘Best Red Wine in the World’ at the Vinalies Internationales competition in Paris, while 4th-generation owner Leonor Freitas has been awarded a ‘Comendadora’ Order of Merit for services to Portugal’s wine trade. The Valoroso range was created to commemorate this honour. The Reserva is a rare marriage of plush Cabernet, Syrah and local speciality Alicante Bouschet, crafted by top winemaker Jaime Quendera. Matured for a year in French and American oak casks, it's packed with spicy black fruit and hints of vanilla. Decant an hour before serving with finest red meat dishes.
From Kilikanoon’s Clare Valley heartland – this cuvée makes use of fruit from several ‘Settlement’ blocks in Leasingham originally given to soldiers returning from the World Wars. Warm days and cool nights yield Shiraz of terrific power, elegance and length. The use of multiple blocks and careful oak ageing, adds complexity for a rich, satisfying premium Kilikanoon Shiraz full of black fruit and peppery notes.
This is a complex, rich, long-flavoured Gran Reserva Rioja from the Chavarri family, whose cellar has been up and running since 1882. In charge today is Ruth Chavarri Muro, the fifth generation of her family to take the helm. The estate’s vineyards are planted at 650 metres, on excellent limestone-rich soils. Averaging 50 to 60 years old, they produce tiny amounts of really concentrated fruit – all meticulously hand picked and sorted. Aged in small French oak barriques, all new for six months and older for the next 18, this fine Gran Reserva – only made in the best years – blends cedar and liquorice with cherry and plum with a touch of mocha on the finish. Wonderfully silky and mellow, it’s spot on with chicken, lamb or an aubergine bake.
Italy’s deep south is best known for big, smoky wines made from its prized local varieties – Primitivo, Negroamaro, and in this case the uniquely Puglian Susumaniello grape. In local dialect Susumaniello means something like “loaded like a donkey”, referring to the wine’s massive amounts of aroma and flavour. Pillastro’s creator Angelo Maci is a leading figure in Puglia’s recent quality revolution, and is fervently proud of local traditions and rare grape varieties. As fans of southern Italian wines – and Pillastro fans in particular – will agree, Puglia offers “undreamed-of character and potential” (Hugh Johnson), and mouthwatering Susumaniello is the supreme example of this. Serve in large glasses with braised lamb shanks or caponata.
Argentine Malbec doesn’t get much finer than this. It's from an estate that has won six Decanter Trophies in three years, two of them for this Barrel Selection. From a Bordeaux wine family, Hervé came to South America to look for a vineyard and fell in love with old-vine Malbec. He not only bought vineyards but also made his home there. Having started in Mendoza, he now has an estate in Patagonia too. He runs his properties like a top Bordeaux château, with an impressive barrel cellar at each. This superb red comes from 30-year-old vines grown in Patagonia’s Río Negro. Made like a fine claret and aged a year in French oak barriques, it's powerful, yet elegant with silky violet and spicy plum fruit. Decant well in advance to let it breathe.
Gloriously succulent McLaren Vale Grenache from the bestselling Zonte's Footstep folk ... we love love love this wine! (And we think you will too). Glittering with plum and red berry fruit, a lovely splash of exotic spice, deliciously soft and smooth tannins ... this is like being given a big, comforting hug from someone you love. Beautiful stuff!
