Beyond the Labels
Pair your chocolate treats with some flavour-packed reds this Easter. Highlights include Gold-medal Barossa Cabernet from Peter Lehmann, deep black Spanish Monastrell, and superb Australian Shiraz.
Black grape varieties are particular popular in South Australia, bathing in the Australian sun ensuring optimal ripeness. No more so than Shiraz – the most planted grape in the area. Deep and ripe in black fruit flavour, distinctive in its peppery spice qualities and with a long, moreish finish that will have you coming back for more. With blackberry, plum and fragrant spice, the Steeple Block Shiraz is made for sipping with fine fare like fillet steak or slow-cooked lamb shanks.
Peter Lehmann was known as the ‘Baron of the Barossa’, was a member of the Order of Australia, was called "a legend in his own lifetime” (Halliday) and “the most famous man in the Australian wine business” (Matthew Jukes). Barossa Cabernet is lavishly dark and mouthfilling ... as you’ll see when you taste this lavish example. Classic, inky black colour with generous lashings of rich dark blackcurrant, forest fruits, chocolate with eucalypt mint and spice undertones.
The unstoppable John Quarisa really is unstoppable! He has been variously described as a “magician” and “a sorcerer” by Halliday. His wines do have a magic knack of winning Gold. His secret? Over 20 years of experience as a winemaker and wine judge – and a great attitude. As John says, “you just can’t take life too seriously”. Taste Quarisa's multi-Gold-winning ‘Enchanted Tree’ Cabernet. It's juicy and rich, with delicious dark plum, blackcurrant, blackberry, and subtle eucalypt and mint. The tannins are fine and smooth... a little bit of magic in the glass!
This is an intensely flavoured, weighty red, similar in style to the rich, powerful and highly sought after reds of Priorat. The big difference, however, is the price – a fraction of that asked for Priorat wines. It was made at the Padró family cellar, founded in 1898, which draws on the expertise of winemaker Mario García. He has had experience throughout Spain (including Priorat, Montsant and Penedès), and has achieved many 5-Star ratings from top wine guide Guía Peñín. Combining concentrated, old bush vine (up to 70 years old) Monastrell (known to us as Mourvèdre or Mataro) plus a portion of strawberry-scented Tempranillo, it’s a lavish and layered wine that’s really hard to resist. It's a brilliant partner to grilled meats, or pair it with your next tapas feast. Delicious!
The Full Fifteen is a powerful customer favourite boasting pages of 5-star online reviews. Andrew McPherson, or ‘Big Mac’ to friends, launched this mighty Aussie red in 2003. It was an instant hit with customers and we really didn’t think it could get any better. Then, in 2012, Andrew appointed Jo Nash as chief winemaker and quality went up another step. Mother of four and married to another winemaker, she's a very busy lady, but fits it all in with a big smile and has many top awards to her name. She took the much-loved Full Fifteen and added yet more layers of gorgeous flavour, all with an elegant touch. Punnets of black summer berries mingle with a seductive, smoky spice. A Big Red to pair with a rib-eye steak or a hearty casserole.
The Idyll Wine Co. is located in the picturesque Moorabool Valley – 15 minutes west of Geelong, Victoria. From here, they make a stunning range of wines sourced from top regions around the country Their philosophy is to ensure precision and passion in every aspect of the winemaking process. The result is premium quality wine that is a true reflection of its varietal character – like this aptly named tempting treasure here. Silky smooth, with layers of fruit and creamy spice, it’s a taste sensation you want to keep on sipping... and sipping... and sipping. It’s irresistible!
