Beyond the Labels
Powerful full-bodied Shiraz – like the best of McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek – showcase ripe blackberry, black pepper, chocolate and liquorice flavours. Elegant, medium-bodied Syrah styles – common to the Clare Valley – delight with aromas of red fruit and white pepper. Buy a delicious array of spectacular Aussie Shiraz here.
Founded in 1886 by Dr William Angove of Cornwall. He began making wine and brandy as a hobby (a product they're still famous for), but by the early 1900s had built a fully equipped cellar and planted extensive vineyards in the Adelaide foothills. Today, fifth-generation Victoria and Richard Angove run the business, while Sophie Angove oversees viticulture. They continue to pioneer modern styles of wine with a focus on sustainability. We have been working with the Angove family for many years, and our close, personal connection has developed into an exclusive wine range. The fruit for this luscious Shiraz comes from a vineyard near Whirlpool Corner on the lovely Murray River. It's deep, dark and delicious, and great with a steak hot off the grill.
Approachable in every way, Inigo is the excellent value range of wines from the Clare Valley's Sevenhill winery. Named in honour of a young 16th Century Spanish courtier called Inigo, who eventually swapped a life of violence for one dedicated to helping others – co-founding the religious order we know today as the Jesuits. The Jesuits settled in the Clare Valley in 1848 and began making wines. Today the Sevenhills cellar continues the practice and sustains a growing reputation for quiality under winemaker, Will Shields. In the Inigo Shiraz, toasty oak, prunes, mocha and licorice aromas meld together setting the scene for generous dark-fruited flavours of plums and blackberries, threaded through with coconut and oatmeal nuances. Slow-braised beef cheeks would heighten the experience.
This special edition ‘The Prize’ Black Pig Shiraz is made with prime fruit from a renowned McLaren Vale estate. Being a top-secret collaboration, we can't tell you which one, can’t even give handy clues, but it is a very fine estate with wines that sell for top dollar. At full price this prize red is great value (and if you're paying less than that you're onto a seriously good thing!)) In the Black Pig family it is top hog, lord of the litter… Look forward to heady aromas of lush black fruits with hints of white pepper and leather. The palate is overflowing with blackberry, plum and black cherry, wrapped in layers of vanilla and creamy chocolate. This is indeed a "corker of a porker". Enjoy!
Bold blackberry fruit and spice suggest classic McLaren Vale Shiraz, while rare depth and complexity reflect premium, old vine fruit. A class act, this moreish red is ready to be enjoyed right now – ideally with a juicy rump steak, lamb cutlets, pork sausages or hearty moussaka.
Michael and Filippo Scarpantoni helped plant their family’s prized vineyards in the 1970s ... by hand, using no machinery! In fact, the Scarpantoni family has roots in McLaren Vale dating back to 1958. Their lavish reds are much sought after by connoisseurs – not surprising, considering they have taken out Australia’s No.1 wine prize – the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy! This comes from the oldest vineyard site in McLaren Vale. The black alluvial soils from this rich valley produce beautiful inky hues with aromatic blackberry and licorice aromas. The palate is full and rich with a complexity of dark fruits, classic chocolate notes and finishing long with soft silky tannins.
Langhorne Creek, source of so much of the ‘secret ingredient’ fruit behind so many big name Trophy winners, was where the Marauding Vintners went to find Chairman Shiraz… in their words “the self-styled Chairman, is the big man of Australian wine whose power is recognised and respected around the world. Power he might have, in spades, but you can’t overlook the charm. Bring him to the table and he’s sure to win over the guests...” Hefty, passionate, dark, spicy and irresistible – spend time with the Chairman, and he’ll leave you wanting more.
