According to winemaker Alan Kennett (and thousands of Black Stump customers), when you combine Durif and Shiraz “magical things happen”. Perhaps that explains Black Stump’s splendid two decades of popularity. The wine owes its name to a mythical outback marker of the boundary between the known world and the unknown. Describe anything as the best “this side of the black stump” and you mean it’s reckoned to be unbeatable. How appropriate for an affordable Aussie red of peerless intensity and popularity. Dark Durif, “the grape that takes no prisoners” (The Observer), and impressively juicy Shiraz make a perfect marriage, creating a velvety, voluptuous, and irresistible style. Serve in large glasses with steak and kidney pie or a Sunday roast.
This supple, great-value red shows that Argentina produces more than just great Malbec – it excels with Syrah too! The wine is from Zuccardi – a highly awarded, third-generation family cellar founded in the 1960s by Don Alberto Zuccardi. An engineer by trade, he invented an irrigation system then planted a vineyard to show wine estates how it could benefit grape quality. Now Zuccardi is one of Mendoza’s leading cellars: winner of Best Vineyard in South America, New World Winery of the Year, a Lifetime Achievement award, Top winemaker prize and their top wines regularly gain 100 Parker points. Not quite in that league, this elegant red combines Syrah's peppery bramble fruit with Malbec’s spicy violet notes. Tasty with chilli or pasta.
A smooth, richly spiced, black red – our most reordered French red ever and with a history of umpteen Golds. From deep in southern France, Cabalié needs no ceremony. Just large glasses for serving! Its secret? It’s crafted by a master winemaker, Hervé Sabardeil, following the centuries-old style beloved of Roman centurions, who first made wine there. Raspberry-rich Grenache, with herby black-fruit Syrah and Carignan, Cabalié has impressive concentration. That’s due to the maturity of the vines, most well over 50 years old. The tiny berries they produce give Cabalié extraordinarily rich, ripe flavours. Boasting 8 Golds in as many vintages, this much-loved red is warming solo or with hearty dishes.
As the late Spanish wine expert John Radford once wrote in Decanter, the tiny enclave of Campo de Borja is “the source of some of the best value wines from Spain, if not the world”. It remains true. Where else could you find such a mellow, complex, oak aged red at this price? It’s made by our old friend Pamela Geddes (who also makes our bestselling Monasterio de Santa Cruz) at the 500-year-old Bodegas Ruberte. 60% of the wine is Garnacha from vines planted in 1958. They’re not as prolific these days, but the intensity of flavour in the grapes is impressive. The balance is Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds classic cassis character and structure to the spicy, raspberry rich Garnacha. A rich and fragrant Spanish red – a great choice with lamb.
Winner of both a Double Gold and a Decanter 'Best in Show' Trophy, this Cabernet, bleded with a little of Chile's speciality grape Carmènere, it's a real triumph. Chile’s Colchagua Valley has received more international awards than any other Chilean wine region. Its three prime areas – the mountainous Andean sector, hot central flatlands and cool coastal region – combined form a wine with perfect balance. That’s why Casa Silva planted vines, originally imported from Bordeaux, in each of these back in 1912. These old vines produce grapes of lovely concentration – packed to the rafters with flavour. Like many great wineries, the Silva family incorporate respect for nature into their winemaking. Spending time and pouring care into the vineyard delivers authentic quality in the cellar. You can certainly taste that in this juicy, fruit-filled red. The winemaker Juan recommends it with steak pie or kebabs.
In a region famous for both its azure-lined Adriatic coast and snow-capped mountains, Abruzzo, you'll find the inspiring young winemaker, Ludo to her friends. You'll usually see her on her bike, pedalling the hills between vineyards, waving 'cia' - hello and goodbye – to those she passes. This is her homeland, so she knows it well, loves it, too. Trebbiano is her (and Abruzzo's) white grape of choice, making vibrant, lemon and lime-fresh white. For reds, her passion is the Abruzzo hero Montepulciano – that bright, plum-filled, all velvety-supple character, the reds of which are deliciously moreish, especially in the able hands of Ludo. A great all-round red. In summer, try it lightly chilled. Raise a glass, remember her name. Cia' Ludo!
