Wine Summary
Pillastro is one of our bestselling Italian reds – customers love all that richness, warmth and bold, ripe fruit. It comes from Puglia, in Italy’s deep south, best known for big, smoky wines made from prized local varieties Primitivo and Negroamaro. This 2020 is from Angelo Maci, a leading figure in the quality revolution of the last two decades, whose cellar Cantine Due Palme has thrice been named ‘Winery of the Year’. Angelo himself has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement award too. Made purely from Primitivo, this is a rich, powerful red. A period of oak ageing has infused the wine’s generous plum and damson character with notes of spice and vanilla. Enjoy with hearty casseroles, pasta with a rich tomato sauce, or garlic roasted lamb.

Wine Summary
Toasty tannins underpin this striking Reserve destined for export. We managed to cheekily take some of the allocation. A superb Cabernet from an excellent Coonawarra vintage. Fruit was selected from premium Coonawarra vineyards, crushed and underwent fermentation for two weeks on skins. Following fermentation the must was gently pressed before being transferred to oak. The wine was matured in French oak before blending and bottling. The resulting wine has excellent depth with integrated oak tannins.

Wine Summary
The word ‘Nacional’ is reserved for treasures that fly the flag for Portugal. Touriga Nacional certainly does that. A decade ago the Freitas family planted the grape on their acclaimed Fava vineyard. Since 2015, it has produced a wine so special that it's bottled under the vineyard name and has won 17 Golds. That makes it over 70 Golds in 12 years for this fine family estate. Dating back to 1920, Casa Ermelinda Freitas is run by fourth generation winemaker Leonor Freitas. She has been awarded a ‘Comendadora’ for her services to Portuguese wine and her daughter, Joana, is following in her footsteps. Aged in barrel, this rich red is packed with spicy berry, herb and mineral character. Open early and serve with roast meats or a rich casserole.

Wine Summary
As Robert Parker says, “Spain leads the world for sensational wine bargains of character and soul”, none more so than its mature reds. Nowhere else produces mellow, barrel aged wines of such remarkable quality and price. Take Palacio del Conde – a gorgeously complex, oaky 2014 from Valencia. Part of this region is close to the coast, while the more southerly part is inland, up in the hills, and dry. It’s there that winemaker Marta Martínez selects the finest, hand harvested – from 50 year old vines – Tempranillo grapes for this Gran Reserva, then ages the wine for three years in oak barrels. A wonderfully fragrant, silky red with mature redcurrant and strawberry fruit and a rich, toasty character. Sublime with roast lamb or tapas.

Wine Summary
Argentina’s Malbec is one of the trendiest wines on the planet. Most comes from Mendoza, but further north lies San Juan, with vineyards at altitudes of around 700 metres. There you’ll find Bodegas Antigua. The business was founded in 1990 by Don Luis Victor Chirino. A builder by trade, but a huge wine enthusiast too, he bought two wineries and land to plant with vines. His headquarters is a historic building which in 1990 required considerable restoration. Within four years it had been transformed into a magnificent cellar, with an art gallery and museum alongside it, thanks to Don Luis’ wife Azucena, who enlisted the help of local artists. Made from hand picked grapes, Sierra del Plata is tasty solo or with grilled meats or pasta.
