For lovers of big, smooth reds, El Bombero is a top choice. It comes from Cariñena, a hot, arid region of Spain where sun-loving grapes like Garnacha (same as Châteauneuf’s Grenache) achieve amazing ripeness. Ancient vines, hot summers and a lack of rain mean fewer grapes, which in turn means superb flavour intensity. Hence mouthfilling El Bombero. There are no fancy châteaux around Cariñena, but, as Decanter magazine notes, that doesn’t stop it from being home to some of the best-value reds in the world. From award-winning winemaker Javier Domeque, El Bombero is packed with spicy black fruit power and a warm glow. Great on its own and a tasty choice for casseroles, full-flavoured pasta dishes, herby roast sausages and mash, and barbecues.

Courtesy of our good friends, the Marauding Vintners, who know exactly where to find the best wines and genuine characters – meet Doctor Durif. The back label tells her story. Unable to settle in her native France, the good doctor has found climates much more to her liking in California and in spots across South and South Eastern Australia. A smooth operator,mostly seen alone (at times using a pseudonym), she actually mixes easily. Her easy charm can mask her dark side, complexity and genuine depth, but given her frequent extremepopularity it’s odd she’s not more widely known. Dark, deep, a bit spicy and an infectious easy charm. We think you're going to love her.

This top Cabernet exclusive comes from a fifth-generation winemaker whose ancestors planted some of the first vines in South Australia in 1837. Halliday calls Leconfield “a distinguished estate with a proud history, long renowned for its Cabernet”. Look for mint-edged aromas of blackcurrant, dark plum and wild herbs on a beautifully balanced palate. Jane Faulkner from the Halliday Wine Companion calls it "an excellent red for immediate drinking".

This rich, barrel-aged Nero d'Avola is a tribute to Dino Taschetta's grandfather and his vineyard. In 1968 western Sicily was rocked by an earthquake. The village of Poggioreale was abandoned tand rebuilt further down the hill. The vineyards were abandoned too. 50 years on, Dino set out to recover his grandfather’s lost plot of land Now the grapes make this rich, blackberry-spiced red."Sicilian wine has been very on-trend in the last couple of years, with the world discovering the red wines from the island’s native varieties. Damson, liquorice and bramble lead the aromas. Don’t let the dark colour in the glass deceive you – this is quite light on its feet through the palate. The tannin is fine and chalky, and the oak just frames the bright fruit. Has that southern italian spice element to it, without overpowering the delicate fruit flavours. A smooth, richly spiced, black red – our most reordered French red ever and with a history of umpteen Golds. From deep in southern France, Cabalié needs no ceremony. Just large glasses for serving! Its secret? It’s crafted by a master winemaker, Hervé Sabardeil, following the centuries-old style beloved of Roman centurions, who first made wine there. Raspberry-rich Grenache, with herby black-fruit Syrah and Carignan, Cabalié has impressive concentration. That’s due to the maturity of the vines, most well over 50 years old. The tiny berries they produce give Cabalié extraordinarily rich, ripe flavours. Boasting 8 Golds in as many vintages, this much-loved red is warming solo or with hearty dishes.
