From the region's southerly vineyards close to Montalcino (famous for Brunello), this Chianti has an attractive silkiness with ripe red fruits. Duca di Cardino is made by the Barbanera winery, founded in 1938 and still family run today. A recent overhaul of the cellar has further elevated the high quality of their wines. The name of this Chianti pays homage to a family ancestor, Orazio Barbanera, who defeated the Florentines in a skirmish in a field of artichokes, earning him the title Duca di Cardino (Duke of Artichokes). This stylish tribute to the Duke, made from Sangiovese, has a ripe cherry character with hints of spice and leather. The winemaker is the talented Sofia Barbanera, who is relishing the Gold medal, not to mention 92pts from the prestigious Luca Maroni! Serve with antipasti, roast meats, risotto or Tuscan bean stew.
