Zonte's Footstep ‘shining sword rising from the water’ moment wasn’t quite of Arthurian legend, but by a misty dam early one morning. The first rapier-like cut of this Sauvignon Blanc inspired their Excalibur. Perfect for sitting down with a well-chilled glass on a balmy summer’s eve, accompanying a plate of any fresh crustacean known to man. Excalibur will surely impress with its white grapefruit zest, lemon curd notes and delicate citrus blossom aromas, with tart gooseberry and mineral-like acidity. It is the perfect accomplice to just such occasions.
An expression of the region's maritime climate, Zonte's Footstep's beloved McLaren Vale grape factory produces Shiraz with a signature milk chocolate core – their wonky take on decadent and lush. As they say at the winery, it's "Willy, Willy Good". Named for its prized chocolate character, this McLaren Vale classic melds dark cherries and plums with black forest cake and mocha to create a seam velvety flavour coursing to a long finish. "Excellent length here with very fine, plush tannins and impeccable balance. Lots to love and a wine which will age for a decade... Great value... 94pts" (Ken Gargett, WinePilot).
Canto di Lago, meaning ‘Song of the Lake’ was named after the vineyard planted to Italian varietals next to the shores of Lake Alexandrina in Langhorne Creek, where this wine originally started out. According to the vignerons, the gently lapping water is more beautiful for a vine than any other sound. The 2018 comes from the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula, so it is perhaps more Canto di Mare than Canto di Lago! Whatever watery inspiration the vines are enjoying, it's certainly having a great effect – as you will see with this sumptuous three-time Gold-medal winner!
The fruit for Blackberry Patch comes from one block in the heart of the Langhorne Creek and another in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. Plush and silky cassis-rich Cabernet Sauvignon (95%) with a dash of red-berry Tempranillo (5%) – this is juicy, mouthfilling stuff. As the folk at Zonte’s Footstep like to say, they take their vineyards and their wines seriously, but not themselves. As per usual for Zonte’s Footstep, it’s a multi-medal winner too. “"Delectably styled and composed, the wine shows dark fruit richness together with smoked game, almond and fragrant spice notes on the nose. It's plump and succulent, offering fabulous fruit power, well supported by silky texture and fine tannins with a prolonged delicious finish... 94pts” (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit).
Just what the Doctor ordered: The Zonte’s Footstep Lake Doctor Vineyard is situated on the shores of Lake Alexandrina in Langhorne Creek. Each summer afternoon, the house-cooling breeze of the ‘Lake Doctor’ arrives and revives vines and vignerons alike. Langhorne Creek Shiraz excellence: This red is not just about the fruit. It’s earthy too. Think juicy plum pudding and five spice flavours with a lick of cedary oak. What we have always loved about Langhorne Creek is they produce cracker wines – consistently! Dinosaur inspiration... While replanting the vineyard in 1999, some HUGE footprints were discovered, from the largest known marsupial to have ever lived - the Diprotodon. Hence, the ‘Footstep’ part of their name!
